Audition for Los Angeles Children’s Chorus

Los Angeles Children’s Chorus welcomes children ages 8-12 to audition by appointment May 31 - June 3, 2012 for its nationally-recognized treble choral music education and performance program. Children ages 6 and 7 are eligible without audition for First Experiences in Singing classes. Junior and high school young men can audition in August for the Young Men's Ensemble.

LACC offers children the opportunity to grow musically by supporting their healthy vocal development with a balanced sequential program. Children enjoy the shared experience of creating choral music with their ensembles, acquire musicianship skills, develop individual voices through one-on-one vocal coaching, and build camaraderie with fellow choristers.

LACC also affords its choristers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to participate in its national and international touring program, and experience the stage through collaborative performances with some of the world’s most prestigious companies (LA Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, etc). Through LACC’s transformative program, children discover their musical ability and creativity in a supportive environment that nurtures the whole child.

Below is a list of frequently-asked questions regarding auditions at LACC:

When and where do auditions take place?

Auditions by appointment will take place May 31 – June 3, 2012 (treble choirs) and in August 2012 (Young Men's Ensemble) for the 2012-2013 season. Auditions take place in the music department of Pasadena Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Madison Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.

How do I schedule an audition?

We will begin scheduling auditions about one month prior to auditions. Please download an Audition Information Form and return it to the chorus addresss. We will contact you to schedule an audition time. You may also contact the Chorus at 626.793.4231 or info@lachildrenschorus.org to request a form.

Is there an audition fee?

Yes. The Chorus charges $50 for each audition to cover costs. Audition scholarships are need-based and available upon request.

If I am accepted, how much will my tuition be?

There is a $100 fee to register for chorus membership. For the 2010-2011 season, Preparatory Choir tuition is $1,020, Apprentice Choir tuition is $1,380, Intermediate Choir is $1,460, Concert Choir is $1,720 and Young Men's Ensemble is $1,395. Scholarships are available. Upon acceptance in the Chorus, you may request a Scholarship Application from the Chorus office at 626.793.4231.

What happens during the audition?

You will meet the conducting staff. For the treble choirs, you will audition with several other children for about an hour. You will be asked to talk about your schooling and musical experience. You will listen to and be asked to repeat some rhythmic and musical phrases, sing some new music and answer a few written questions about music. While you are auditioning, your parents will attend a short meeting to become familiar with Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, its goals as well as its expectations of choristers and their families.

For the Young Men's Ensemble auditions, boy's should prepare one solo art or folk song. Those interested in auditioning should be proficient in the fundamentals of musical notation and sight singing.

How should I prepare?

No special preparation is necessary for the audition. It is suggested that you simply get a good night’s rest the night before and not eat or drink any dairy products for several hours before your audition.

How will I learn whether or not I was accepted?

Within a few weeks, you will receive a letter notifying you of the results of your audition. Most choristers accepted into the Chorus will be admitted to become members of our two beginning divisions, Preparatory Choir or Apprentice Choir. Young men auditioning for the Young Men's Ensemble will be notified of their audition results by the end of August.

When will I rehearse?

Rehearsals for the first three divisions of the Chorus (Preparatory, Apprentice, and Intermediate Choirs) are held once a week, on a weekday in the late afternoon or early evening. Concert Choir rehearses early evenings on Sunday and Tuesday. The Young Men's Ensemble rehearses Sunday aftenoons. Included in the rehearsal times are musicianship classes and one-on-one vocal coaching. All rehearsals take place at Pasadena Presbyterian Church (corner of Madison Avenue and Colorado Boulevard).
