(PASADENA, CA) October 19, 2007 – The internationally acclaimed Slovenia-based girls’ choir Carmina Slovenica, led by Karmina Šilec, makes its first ever Southern California appearance when it stages the Southern California premiere of it ground-breaking minimalist project “CS Light,” featuring the music of Steve Reich, Phillip Glass, Thomas Jennefelt, Morton Feldman, Karin Rehnqvist, Bronius Kutavieius and Tellu Turka, in a free concert on Saturday, November 3, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Pasadena. The avant-garde production incorporates the music of these minimalist masters with movement, drama and stage elements to create landscapes of sounds that thrive at the intersection of sound and light, image and object. Presented by Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (LACC), the performance is part of a California tour by Carmina Slovenica that includes three earlier stops in the Bay Area. LACC augments the program with several works conducted by Artistic Director Anne Tomlinson and also joins forces with Carmina Slovenica to perform a traditional Slovenian folk song. “Carmina Slovenica holds a unique place among girls’ choruses, and Karmina Šilec is a renowned pioneer in the field of choral music for girls' voices,” said Tomlinson. “We are delighted to present this progressive choir and this ground-breaking musical project.” Based in Maribor, Slovenia, Carmina Slovenica is recognized as one of the most creative and accomplished choirs in the world. The elite chorus of 30 girls ages 12 to 18 has introduced new works into the repertoire and regularly appears in the world’s most distinguished venues, including the Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana, San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, the Teresa Carreńo Theatre in Caracas, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. It has toured extensively to critical acclaim throughout Europe, Canada, Africa, Central and South America, Japan, China and the U.S. One of the foremost avant-garde vocal ensembles, Carmina Slovenica has embarked recently on contemporary music projects including the award-winning productions “Choregie,” “Scivias,” “Vampirabile,” “Adiemus,” and “From Immemorial Times.” While committed to expanding the contemporary music repertoire, the choir also embraces early and ethnic vocal music, giving life to each of these diverse musical styles with its unique and virtuosic sound. Carmina Slovenica is featured on seven CDs and three DVDs, and has made numerous television and radio appearances at home and abroad. The concert is free and seating is on a first-come first-served basis. The First United Methodist Church is located at 500 East Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena.
